World War II History
Beneath the natural beauty and serenity of Peleliu Island lays a dark and violent past. In 1944, a ferocious battle took place on the island between occupying Imperial Japanese forces and invading U.S. forces. After a long and gruelling three month battle, the U.S. succeeded in securing the island ending the 30-year Japanese regime in Palau.
Remnants from this bloody battle as well as from the Japanese occupation itself can still be found throughout the island today. In fact, one of these buildings now houses the Peleliu World War II Memorial Museum which opened its doors in 2004 during the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Peleliu. Many historians and history buffs continue to visit Peleliu around the anniversary.
